Dear visitor, Welcome to the Madách Imre Gimnázium website.
Madách Imre Gimnázium is a highly academic secondary school in the centre of Budapest. It was established in 1881 as the first state secondary school in the capital. The first school leaving exams were held in 1890 with 40 students, and since then approximately 14,000 students have graduated.
The present building was completed in 1892, and major reconstruction work to modernize the building was finished in 2005.
In 1921, the school adopted the name of the famous 19th-century playwright, Imre Madách, who was influenced in his writings by the works of Milton, Goethe, Byron, and Shelley. His masterpiece, ‘The Tragedy of Man’, has been translated into several languages and performed in theatres in a number of countries as well, and put on stage in several countries.
About 600 students attend the school at present, and there is a teaching staff of 55. Our curriculum successfully prepares students for school leaving exams and further studies in different fields of higher education.
We understand the many challenges of the 21st century and are convinced that communication is the answer to many of them. For this reason, the main focus is on providing excellent language teaching. All students in our 4-year programme learn English and in addition choose a second foreign language such as German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Latin, or French these languages are taught in 4 or 5 lessons a week. In 2004 we started a 5-year programme with a language preparatory year in Year 9. Students in the programme learn the chosen first foreign language (English, German, or French) in 11 lessons a week during the first year of their studies.
Drama, arts and music have always played an important role in the life of our school. We make it a priority that our students become open-minded adults who understand and are responsive to the world of art. The drama group puts at least one major performance on stage every year. The school choir has been in existence since 1973 and has won many awards.
We also believe that travel further expands the horizons of our students so close contact is maintained with schools abroad. A variety of study trips are also organised every summer.
